Supplier: SIGMA ALDRICH MICROSCOPY
Description: Safranin O, also known as basic red 2, is a basic, cationic, and metachromatic azine dye used as a biological stain. The characteristic azine chromophore contains the phenazine, a planar, tricyclic dibenzopyrazine, which consists of two non-planar benzene rings linked by two nitrogen atoms. A delocalised positive charge, an alternation of aromatic and quinonoid structures, and diazotisable amine groups constitute the chromophoric system. c-Methylation makes this dye of moderate overall size. The trimethyl cationic form of safranine is lipophilic, whereas the dimethyl forms are weakly hydrophilic. The dye is commercially available as a chloride.

Description: Matte, permanent self-laminating and wrap-around B-461 polyester labels for smooth surfaces. For use on conical tubes, cryo tubes and vials. Suitable for autoclaves, hot wwater baths (100 °C) and cryo or liquid nitrogen applications.

Supplier: Thermo Fisher Scientific
Description: 1,10-Phenanthroline, anhydrous is used as a chelating agent, used as bidendate nitrogen ligands in Heck type reactions as an alternative to phospine ligands. It is widely used as an indicator for alkyllithium reagents and an inhibitor of metallopeptidase enzymes. It is also used in the analysis formulations in end-user industries like food, beverage and pharmaceuticals.

Description: Melamine is combined with formaldehyde to produce melamine resin, a very durable thermosetting plastic used in Formica, and melamine foam, a polymeric cleaning product. The end products include countertops, dry erase boards, fabrics, glues, housewares and flame retardants. Melamine is one of the major components in Pigment Yellow 150, a colorant in inks and plastics.Melamine also enters the fabrication of melamine poly-sulfonate used as superplasticiser for making high-resistance concrete. Sulfonated melamine formaldehyde (SMF) is a polymer used as cement admixture to reduce the water content in concrete while increasing the fluidity and the workability of the mix during its handling and pouring. It results in concrete with a lower porosity and a higher mechanical strength exhibiting an improved resistance to aggressive environments and a longer life-time. The use of melamine as fertiliser for crops had been envisaged during the '50s and '60s because of its high nitrogen content (2/3).[7] However melamine is much more expensive to produce than other common nitrogen fertilisers, such as urea. To be effective as a fertiliser, it is essential that the plant nutrients are released or made available in a manner that matches the needs of the growing crop. The nitrogen mineralisation process for melamine is extremely slow, making this product both economically and scientifically impractical for use as a fertiliser.

Description: Iron metabolism is essential for sustaining mammalian homeostasis. Iron uptake and distribution is a highly regulated process in mammalian cells that is monitored by two iron sensing proteins; iron regulatory protein-1 and -2 (IRP-1 and -2), also known as iron responsive element-binding protein-1 and -2 (IREBP-1 and -2) or aconitase 1 and 2. IRP-1 and IRP-2 are important soluble regulatory factors that mediate iron uptake and storage in mammalian cells. They are capable of either repressing translation or enhancing mRNA stability by associating with stem-loop motifs known as iron-responsive elements (IREs). IRPs respond to stress mediators, iron concentration and signaling factors, including nitrogen monoxide, cytokines and hydrogen peroxide.

Description: Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is an essential water-soluble vitamin that is a cofactor in glucogenesis and in the metabolism of fatty acids and leucine. Biotinidase is a 523 amino acid enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of biocytin to biotin and lysine. Secreted into extracellular space, biotinidase is expressed in liver, heart, placenta, brain, skeletal muscle, pancreas and kidney. Biotinidase contains one carbon-nitrogen hydrolase domain, which is involved in the reduction of organic nitrogen compounds and ammonia production. Defects in the gene encoding biotinidase are the cause of biotinidase deficiency, which is characterized by skin rash, ataxia, seizures, hearing loss, hypotonia and optic atrophy. These symptoms are due to the individual’s inability to reutilize biotin and can, therefore, typically be treated with the addition of free biotin.

Description: Mono-ADP-ribosylation is one of the posttranslational protein modifications regulating cellular metabolism (e.g. nitrogen fixation) in prokaryotes. Mono-ADP-ribosylation is a process in which the ADP-ribose moiety of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is transferred to an acceptor amino acid. Five mammalian ADP-ribosyltransferases (ART1-ART5) have been cloned, and expression is restricted to tissues such as cardiac and skeletal muscle, leukocytes, brain and testis. ART3 (ADP-ribosyltransferase 3), also known as Ecto-ADP-ribosyltransferase 3, is a testis specific membrane protein that does not appear to have ADP-ribosyltransferase activity. It lacks the R-S-EXE active site motif and is therefore unable to catalyze the reaction. ART3 is predominantly found in spermatocytes and may play a role in spermatogenesis.
