Description: Auramine O has been used to study the cuticle/cutin in the epidermis of the pollen presenter in Vangueria infausta. Auramine O is used for the staining of acid-fast organisms, coccidia. Auramine O along with carbol generates brilliant yellow fluorochrome of tubercle bacilli. It is effective in detecting positive cases of tuberculosis. Auramine O binds to the mycolic acid in the bacterial cell wall. Certified for use by fluorescence microscopy in Churukian′s modification of Truant′s fluorescent method for acid fast bacilli on paraffin sections.

Description: Bond Elut™ PRS is a strong cation exchange sorbent that is also relatively high in polarity. With no appreciable degree of hydrophobicity, in non-polar solvents, PRS is capable of polar and hydrogen bonding interactions. Due to the very low pKa of PRS, a high ionic strength eluent must be used, and so the use of PRS is recommended for weaker cationic species such as pyridinium compounds.

Description: Xylenol orange tetrasodium salt is a fluorochrome acid dye with complexing and chelating properties that make it useful as an indicator in the spectrophotometric detection and assay of metal ions such as calcium, cadmium, bismuth, zinc, lead, and mercury. Its tetrasodium salt especially is used as an indicator in metal titrations. It changes color from yellow to red between pH 6.4 to 10.4. It has six potentially anionic substituents, one being sulfonate, and is anionic under staining conditions and during most laboratory applications.

Description: The green fluorescent protein (GFP) is a 27 kDa protein isolated originally from the jellyfish Aequoria victoria. It has an endogenous fluorochrome activity with excitation maximum at 395nm and emission maximum at 509 nm, which is similar to that of fluorescein. GFP can be expressed in fluorescent form in essentially any prokaryotic or eukaryotic cell.
This GFP rabbit antibody was made against a recombinant GFP construct originating from an Aequoria species which was engineered to improve spectral properties and prevent oligomerization (1). This form of GFP, referred to as AcGFP, is 94% identical to the eGFP developed by Tsien and co-workers. The antibody can be used to verify the expression, size and stability of both AcGFP and eGFP fusion proteins in western blotting experiments and to amplify GFP signals in tissues of transgenic animals.

Description: mCherry is an engineered derivative of one of a family of proteins originally isolated from Cnidarians (jelly fish, sea anemones and corals). The mCherry protein was derived from DsRed, a red fluorescent protein from so-called disc corals of the genus Discosoma. DsRed is a 223 amino acid ~28kDa protein similar in size and properties to GFP, but, obviously, produces a red rather than a green fluorochrome. The original DsRed was engineered extensively in the Tsien lab to prevent it from forming tetramers and dimers and to modify and improve the spectral properties (1-3). The resulting monomeric protein is useful for applications such as Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET, also known as Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer). Several further cycles of mutation, directed modification and evolutionary selection produced mCherry, which is monomeric and has an excitation maximum at 587 nm and and emission maximum at 610 nm (4).
