It is commonly used as a surface modifier or surface treatment agent to render surfaces superhydrophobic, such as titanium or carbon nanotubes (CNT) hollow membranes.

Poly(vinylidene flouride) (PVDF) may also be coated with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane to synthesise a membrane to remove organic compounds which may be hazardous and volatile. It can also be used in the silanisation of silicon wafer, or the production of chemical surface patterns of self assembled monolayers.
