Sulforhodamine B (also known as SRB, kiton rhodamine B, lissamine rhodamine B, or sulphorhodamine B) is a bright-pink anionic, aminoxanthene dye carrying two sulfonate substituents.
Sulforhodamine B (SRB) is known for use in SRB assay for the determination of in vitro cytotoxicity through staining and the observation of live cells, proliferation and drug screening. It has been used in the SRB assay to evaluate the effect of mouthwashes on protein content in primary cultures of human fibroblasts. It is also suitable as a microscopic tracer for the assessment of blood-brain barrier integrity by post mortem inspection of frozen sections. SRB is useful as a caries detector dye with subsequent inspection of histological material.
