Spermine tetrahydrochloride

Spermine is a naturally occuring polyamine that occurs in all eukaryotes, but is rare in prokaryotes. It is essential for cell growth in both normal and neoplastic tissue.

Spermine is formed through the addition of an aminopropyl group to spermidine by spermine synthase. Spermine is strongly basic in character, and in aqueous solution at physiological pH, all of its amino groups will be positively charged.

Used to precipitate DNA from low salt aqueous buffers. Spermine tetrahydrochloride was used to precipitate DNA for flow cytometric analysis from fresh frozen breast cancer tissue, archival tissue of salivary gland, renal and thyroid tumors and red blood cells of chicken.

Mixed NMDA agonist/antagonist at the polyamine site. Neuroprotective effects have been observed at high concentrations (1 mM), while neurotoxicity is observed at lower concentrations. It enhances agonist effectiveness at the strychnine-insensitive glycine site.

Soluble in water (100 mg/mL - clear, colorless solution).
