Adonitol (ribitol), a pentose alcohol, is metabolised to teicholic acids used in the cell walls of gram positive bacteria. Adonitol is often compared to other cell permeating molecules such as formamide, propanediol, and DMSO as a cryopreservation agent.
Adonitol is a crystalline pentose alcohol (C5H12O5) formed by the reduction of ribose which does not reduce benedict solution.
Soluble in water (100 mg/ml - clear, colorless solution)
