Auramine O is used for acid resistant bacteria in sputum or paraffin.
It is used with rhodamine B, causing acid-fast organisms to fluoresce. Used with acridine orange, showing acid-fast organisms and fungi, mycobacteria. (Auramine O is reportedly specific for mycolic acid). It is used as a Schiff reagent, causing DNA in nuclei to fluoresce yellow-green and is used with safranin O chloride to stain spores in bacterial cultures.
Soluble in ethanol (1 mg/ml), water (10 mg/ml).
